It's All About Timing

It's all about timing

Taken from http://www.metronomeonline.com/

Please click on the link and follow this excersize...It will make you a super musician

No matter if you play drums, piano, guitar, or any other musical instrument, timing has an enormous affect on how good you sound. Great timing will make even the poorest melodic idea shine, while weak timing will make a fantastic melody loose its appeal. Just like other aspects of musicality, timing is a skill that can be learned and improved. I would like to share with you a few concepts and exercises that will help you to develop a better understanding and control of timing.

In order to improve your timing, it is important to understand that every beat can be played in three different ways: before the beat, right on the beat, after the beat.

Each note you play relates to the beat. If you had the ability to recognize exactly where you are hitting the notes in regards to the beat you would then be able to improve your timing tremendously.

This following simple exercise will help you recognize your timing pattern. It is very simple, yet very effective. It was shown to me by Kenwood Dennard, a fantastic drummer, teacher and friend. If you want to get the most out of this exercise, you should record yourself and analyze the results.

  1. Set your metronome to 60 BPM or use the online metronome link
  2. Pick up your musical instrument
  3. Play 60 short notes, try to hit each note
    exactly on the beat
  4. Play back the recording and mark how many beats you hit exactly on the beat, how many before the beat and how many after the beat.

You will soon notice your tendencies. Some musicians tend to rush, when others tend to drag. The more you will focus on this simple exercise the better awareness to timing you will have and it will naturally be reflected in your playing. I recommend spending 5-10 minutes every day practicing this exercise.

A good paper on Drums

My Instrument: Snare Drum By Adrien Kosmala

The snare drum is essentially a military instrument. The military snare drum is 15 inches in diameters and 9-12 inches deep. Before the radio existed the soldiers used the snare drum to communicate orders to each other it was invented in the thirteen hundreds.

The drums define the rhythm and keep the beat of the band or the ensemble. The snare drum is played with drumsticks and brushes. You make rhythms with various types of rolls, taps and strokes. The tabor was the first snare drum ever. The increase of the tension in the drum allowed them to play faster. It became popular in the 1400s.

How the snare drum is made. The snare drum was made of metal laminated wood and the head is made of animal skins or plastic. Eight to ten snares are stretched across the bottom of the snare drum.

A famous snare drum player is Jeff Queen he was involved with percussion since the age of ten. Jeff has performed on stages across the country and in Europe he won many awards including an Emmy for the Broadway show called Blast. Another one is Art Blakey he made an album called Blues March. He was leading a group called the Jazz Messengers in the 1950s.

There are different types of snare drums that make a different sound than other snare drums. And it depends on the music you are playing. There are Jazz snare drums, Rock snare drums, Funk snare drums and many more. They can be paired with cymbals, toms, and a base drum to create a drum set. Drum sets are used in Jazz and Rock music.

Opportunity to perform and win Prizes and MONEY!

Hello Parents and Students!

If you have a child or friend who you think is an excellent musician or performer you may be interested in this: http://www.expatexpo.com.my/index.php

OCT. 17th and 18th is the EXPAT EXPO 09. Theres a function called EXPRESSIONS - Creative Activity with International Schools.

In 2008 The Expat Group launched an activity in The Expat Expo called Expressions, a talent show specially designed for students from international schools. It was a big success with parents, local expats and over seas visitors thoroughly enjoying the talented students from the participating international schools. The event gave the students an opportunity to perform in public as well as a chance to win a trophy and cash for their school’s favourite charity. This year we are taking it a step further and have more schools participating with two categories, one for Primary students (aged 7 to 12) and another for Secondary students (aged 13 to 18).

A preliminary round will be held to select the 12 top performers in each category and the finals will be held during The expat Expo’09 on 17th and 18th October in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. One of the key components of this creative activity is that the students will be able to win the prize money or the school’s charity.

There will be 3 winners in each category; 1st – RM3,000 / 2nd – RM1,500 / 3rd – RM500
and this money is to be donated to the respective schools to be disbursed to a charity of their choice.

PRELIMINARY AUDITIONS:
SEPTEMBER 26TH & 27TH
4 - 5 PM LOCATED AT BANGSAR VILLAGE II

By Chan Young

Hi Mr. Kenedy

Hi Mr. Kenedy! My mum showed me the emial you sent! I'm really going to try hard to get into the advanced group.

I hope you choose me!!!!
what if you have a lot of homework to do and you can't do the music report can you do it during the weekend?

happy 4 day weekend!

I Hope everyone has a safe and fun 4 day weekend. For extra credit, wherever you go, try to listen for music. If you can convince your parents to stop and listen to street musicians or performers, hotel, or park musicians even for a few minutes, it can help you. If you do happen to see or hear musicians, and you write one paragraph about it, I will give you extra credit. It will boost your grade or erase an X from your name when you forget an instrument.

Some ideas to write about:

1. How many musicians?
2. what style of music are they playing?
3. What kind of instruments are they playing?
4. How does it make you feel? (good/bad/angry/sad etc)

HOW to PRACTICE?

Amelia had a good question so I thought I'd make a post out of it to help others.

She asked: "How do you practice".

Mr K. wants to give you some tips and pointers on how to practice, as well as what really good musicians do to become better. (Its a secret that only great musicians know).

The biggest secret (most people do not know) is to practice VERY SLOWLY. VERY SLOWLY is better than SUPER FAST. Practicing fast will make you sloppy, and you cannot memorize as easilly. Practicing slowly will help you memorize notes, and fingerings, as well as melodies and techniques that will later turn you into a rock star.

Heres some tips and tricks:

1. Practice slowly (mentioned above)
2. Find a quiet place to practice where you will not be distracted by the TV, or brothers or sisters
3. Choose a song or excersize to work on
4. ALWAYS tap your foot. If you do not you will never find the secret to keeping time
5. Start with the first note, and play until you make a mistake, then go back to the beginning and repeat... Work on the hardest parts of the song first. Dont always play what you know well. Always work on the hardest stuff. This will make you so much better.
6. Listen to yourself, is your sound pleasant? Try a softer breath... see the difference?
7. Practicing everyday is way more important than practicing a lot only one or two days a week.
Its weird but true. 20 minutes everyday is better than 5 hours once a week.
8. Purchase a metronome to help you keep time
9. Always ask Mr. K for extra help.
10. Keep a positive attitude. Never give up. try try again. Dont let the instrument defeat you. You are unstoppable. Be the best, work hard and show the world what you can do!

Are we supposed to type the home work or write it ????????????
SHANNON

HOMEWORK PAPER

YOUR HOMEWORK...DUE SEPT. 18th on my desk!:

You must write one page about your instrument. The history, who, what, where it was created. Who is famous for playing it? The more musicians you list the better. What style of music can you find your instrument? Please write about ANY and all things related to your instrument. ONE page...12pt font...double spaced. IT WILL BE GRADED! For those without computers, you may write in pen or pencil. You may also post your paper here on the website, or email MR. K at Jason_kennedy@iskl.edu.my

WARNING: Plagerism is a serious offense. Cutting and pasting from a web page or book will result in a ZERO for your grade. Students who tell me where they found their information will receive BONUS POINTS!!!!

HINT: check your book....and do google searches....

Forgetting Instruments

As a musician you must learn a new responsibility and know exactly what your schedule is like. Forgetting your instrument is unacceptable and irresponsible behavior. I can understand if it happens once but not all the time. You have a responsibility to your band mates and your school to be the best you can be. I am always willing to help you anyway I can. If you cannot print the calendar from this website at home, then ask me and I'll immediately get you a copy. A hard copy of the calendar is important. Put it on your fridge, your bedroom door, your mirror, or better yet your front door. Find out the night before you go to sleep what the next day is, and put your instrument by your front door, so when you leave you can grab it. You must find a way to remember because now I will lower your grade for forgetting your instrument. A businessman doesn't go to work without a tie, a doctor doesn't go into surgery without tools, a race car driver doesn't go to work without a car, a musician doesn't go to work without an instrument and lots of practice. Please print out the calendar, and lets make this band the best thing Malaysia has ever heard!

DO NOT PLAY ON THE BUS!!!!

It is IMPORTANT that you do not play your instrument on the bus for several reasons. You can hurt yourself if the bus stops suddenly or hit a bump in the road. You may drop it and lose pieces as they roll under the seats. Some students are harrassing people by blowing their instruments in peoples faces, trying to be funny but it is NOT. Ms. Cheng and Mr. Kennedy will discipline any student who breaks this rule.
